Summary

A fiery thriller。 --Kikrus

Breathless。 --School Library Journal

A queer YA reimagining of Thelma & Louise with the aesthetic of Riverdale, for fans of Mindy McGinnis, Courtney Summers, and Rory Power。

Love on the dark side of freedom

When Trixie picks up her best friend Lux for their weekend getaway, they're looking to forget the despair of being trapped in their dead-end rustbelt town。 The girls are packing light: a supply of Diet Coke and an '89 Canon to help Lux frame the world in a sunnier light; half a pack of cigarettes that Trixie doesn't really smoke, and a knife she's hanging on to for a friend that she's never used before。

But a single night of violence derails their trip, and the girls go from ordinary high schoolers to wanted fugitives。 Trying to stay ahead of the cops and a hellscape of media attention, Trixie and Lux grapple with an unforgiving landscape, rapidly diminishing supplies, and disastrous decisions at every turn。 As they are transformed by the media into the face of a #MeToo movement they didn't ask to lead, Trixie and Lux realize that they can only rely on each other, and that the love they find together is the one thing that truly makes them free。

Julia Lynn Rubin takes readers on "a blistering, unapologetic thrill ride" (Emma Berquis) that will leave them haunted and reeling。 Trouble Girls is a "a powerful, beautifully-written gut punch" (Sophie Gonzales)。

This book is very dark and deeply sad but it is incredibly visual and rich。 It makes a lot of sense that the author loves movies because this book is written as if it were a movie。 I’m not sure how I feel about the ending but I think it’s a very good book about how two teenage girls would act in their escape from crime。

Definitely an interesting read。 Important themes。 I just thought there would be more action and more happening。 But it’s really just a lot of monologue and prose

The tires squealed and the smell of burnt rubber filled their noses as they sped out of the parking lot with smiles on their faces。 This is what freedom felt like, a lightness neither of them had ever felt before。 They clasped hands and intertwined their fingers, glancing at each other in anticipation for the adventure that awaited them。Trouble Girls is a queer YA Thelma and Louise retelling with some ties to the #MeToo movement。 While this is YA in some aspects, there are some very adult themes The tires squealed and the smell of burnt rubber filled their noses as they sped out of the parking lot with smiles on their faces。 This is what freedom felt like, a lightness neither of them had ever felt before。 They clasped hands and intertwined their fingers, glancing at each other in anticipation for the adventure that awaited them。Trouble Girls is a queer YA Thelma and Louise retelling with some ties to the #MeToo movement。 While this is YA in some aspects, there are some very adult themes throughout this book。 Both Trix and Lux have been forced to grow up at young ages and are ready to escape their town and experience freedom, but trouble comes for them and they find themselves in deeper than they can dig out from。While this book had some great writing and storytelling going on, there were some major plot holes for me that I couldn’t get past。 Plus the open ending to finish the book left me unsatisfied。 So, while there were some major flaws, I appreciated the overall message this book tried to bring forth about the brokenness in this country when it comes to not allowing women to have a voice and to have the ability to share their truth。If you’re looking for a YA book about the #MeToo movement, you may like this one。TW: Rape, Sexual Assault, Murder, Misogyny, Homophobia, Parent with Dementia。*I received a gifted copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review。 。。。more

Thank you to Julia Lynn Rubin for hosting a giveaway for this book! When I first started reading it, I will admit I was a little thrown off。 The writing is not in the style I am used to and the "voice" of the main character took some getting used to。 Once I got used to the language, however, I started to appreciate why the author chose this approach。 I think the way the girls speak and think feel very realistic and that's one of the things I really liked about this book。 I liked that the story was told from the viewpoint of less wealthy, small-town girls who are incredibly naive。 Their actions made sense and were true to their characters, even though as a reader you want to shake them and tell them no! Lux was definitely a manic pixie dream girl, but it was pointed out in the book and acknowledged that this was how Trixie saw her。 I think there is a difference between just having a shallow, "manic pixie dream girl" character and having a character that is perceived that way as part of the story。 It was also interesting because we often see this dynamic in heterosexual relationships, but queer people can be just as guilty of this too。 I enjoyed this element of the story。I do wish there was more to the book, more depth, and more of the story, but at the same time, I like that it ended the way that it did。 If there was a second book that explored what happened after this book's events ended, I would be interested in reading it!Overall, I enjoyed this book, despite having a hard time with it at first。 I am looking forward to reading more from this author! 。。。more

And what should have been a fun summer road trip ends up turning into them both running through their lives, taking refuge in diners, motels, and even strange hippie communes, sometimes joined by other enigmatic and equally tragic figures。At the same time, their disappearance triggers a nationwide discussion about #MeToo and the expectations for women when it comes to victimhood。 Should there really be a "right" way to be a victim? And how do we frame discussions about assault in a way that doesn't assign blame? This book tackles all of those subjects in the background of a friends-to-lovers romance between two desperate, haunted girls, and it's beautifully tragic。I just wanted more closure after getting so invested in their stories。 This was like Courtney Summers's SADIE all over again。3 to 3。5 stars 。。。more

Glad I read it; wouldn’t read it again。 Good characters and solid complicated dynamics that kept things interesting, but I wanted it to be condensed length wise and a bit more relationship development

Hell yes!!! This was bloody incredible - a whirlwind of a book with a gritty, intense core。 It's a tough read in some ways, not just because, as the book says, you know it'll end in one of two ways。 However, this is easily helped by the incredible prose; I'm excited to read more by Julia Lynn Rubin。 There were some parts that felt superfluous (the lizard?! and the detective!) - I think also I did feel that the protagonist was being quite selfish and assuming regarding her mother's care。 These as Hell yes!!! "Trouble Girls" is a sapphic YA novel about two best friends who are about to go on a road trip, but after a night of unthinkable violence, they end up on the run from the law。 This book was an extremely quick read with engaging characters and an action packed story。 I thought that the chemistry between the two main characters was electrifying and their devotion to each other unlike anything I've seen in YA recently。 Even when things were at their worst, I never questioned their love for each ot "Trouble Girls" is a sapphic YA novel about two best friends who are about to go on a road trip, but after a night of unthinkable violence, they end up on the run from the law。 This book was an extremely quick read with engaging characters and an action packed story。 I thought that the chemistry between the two main characters was electrifying and their devotion to each other unlike anything I've seen in YA recently。 Even when things were at their worst, I never questioned their love for each other, it's the kind of love that was not only romantic, but familial。 You can tell that they aren't going to let each other go without a fight。 The way that things unfolded, especially their relationship, was realistic in most aspects, but there were some things that I thought were weird about the journey。 However, I can't really explain that without giving away spoilers and I try to keep these spoiler free。 I really thought it was cool and kind of claustrophobic how it felt like I was with these girls the whole time。 When they expressed being too hot, or hungry, or thirsty, or dead tired, it felt like I could feel it, too, which is something I don't always experience。 I liked how the ending left things open for interpretation, which is also really all I can say about that。 Something that really stressed me out was the lack of chapters。 There aren't any chapters, it's just continuous, separated by page breaks。 It was still a good and easy read, but I really, really would have preferred chapters。 It made my head hurt。 Extra points for the beautiful cover。 。。。more

This was a 5 star read up until the last page。 The story didn’t feel complete to me with the ending and I would have liked just a little more。 I’m okay with the idea of a cliffhanger but this just wasn’t a good place for it。 I’m begging and praying for a sequel。

Yeah。。。no。 The plot was INCREDIBLY jumpy and went something like this: "i love Lux so much im in love with her so much she's like sunshine or (insert other adjective)" and then shifted to "yes my childhood trauma let's discuss it while driving。" I will say the plot idea was there but this was just not executed well at all。 Yeah。。。no。 The plot was INCREDIBLY jumpy and went something like this: "i love Lux so much im in love with her so much she's like sunshine or (insert other adjective)" and then shifted to "yes my childhood trauma let's discuss it while driving。" I will say the plot idea was there but this was just not executed well at all。 。。。more
